EIGHTY Rolls-Royce cars helped open the 28th Monmouth Festival yesterday as thousands lined the streets to watch this year’s carnival.

The procession by the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club saw the cars make their way from the showground to Charles Rolls’ ancestral home in Hendre in a tribute to mark the centenary of his death.

The cars also passed the memorial statue of Charles Rolls in Agincourt Square.

Also taking part in the carnival, attended by around 2,000 people, were local organisations including the Rotary Club of Monmouth, Wyesham Social Club and Monmouth fire station who had created floats, ranging from VE parties to Disney scenes, which made their way along Monnow Street.

Carnival king and queen Owen Warner and Daniella Nugent were also in the parade.

The festival, which runs until Sunday, includes the Monmouth music festival which opens this Friday and the Monmouth air festival on Sunday.

Spokeswoman, Judith Rossiter said: “We are really pleased at how well the carnival has gone. Everyone has been very enthusiastic and put lots of work into the floats.”

Visitors to the carnival also enjoyed the day.

Sarah Brooks, 43, from Tintern, said: “It has been a very good day and the floats looked great.”

Edward Eckley, 71, who had travelled from Ross-on-Wye to see the carnival, said: “I have really enjoyed it. "The Rolls-Royce cars were beautiful.
