STAFF and pupils at Shirenewton Primary School are celebrating after receiving a glowing inspection report from Estyn.

The primary school was praised for its pupils' academic achievements as well its staff's excellent teaching skills.

The school was awarded a 'Good' judgement for the quality of teaching, the strong leadership and management shown by staff as well as the pupils achievements in subjects such as English and Maths.

It was also noted that boys are achieving higher than national average targets in core subjects such as English literacy.

The good behaviour of most of the pupils as well as their attentiveness to listening to teachers and each other also helped gainthem praise.

The school's prospects for improvement was judged as 'Excellent' due to the high quality of vision and leadership displayed by the head teacher, Jayne Edwards, and the quality of teamwork and staff morale.

Mrs Edwards said: "I am really proud to be the headteacher at Shirenewton Primary School. It's a fantastic school in a beautiful location. I am honoured to lead an excellent team of highly motivated, enthusiastic and capable staff. I am especially fortunate to have an assistant head, Jill Mitchell who is very experienced and skilled.

"She has been the inspiration behind the drive to improve literacy throughout the school over the last few years."

She added: "Governors at the school play a vital role in challenging standards and supporting school improvement. The childrenthemselves play and important role at the school through their various active committees."

The school currently has around 200 pupils on the roll.
