A Caerwent couple say they are furious over proposals to close the village's School Lane to vehicles, arguing the diverted traffic will create chaos outside their home.

Peter and Pauline Edwards who live in Rowan Road say they have lobbied Monmouthshire Council, Monmouth MP David Davies, and the Welsh Government over MCC's proposals to close School Lane.

Talks of closing the road came about after a number of residents living on School Lane as well as Caerwent Community Council raised their concerns over the road described as an accident hotspot.

Back in November, MCC held two public exhibitions inviting residents to make representations on the matter. The outcome was for MCC to launch a full traffic impact study to access the effect closing the road would have on diverted traffic flow and nearby homes.

But Mrs Edwards, 61, says she is angry the council is even considering the plans, saying: "The majority of people in Caerwent are not in favour of closing the road - only the people who live on it. Last year, we submitted a petition with well over 100 signatures opposing it."

She added: "The extent of the accidents on School Lane have been exaggerated. From a few prangs to an accident 'hotspot'. If they divert the traffic down our road it will become an accident 'blackspot'. We will also get all the traffic coming from the school as well. It will create chaos for us and our neighbours."

MCC's cabinet member for county operations, Cllr Bryan Jones, who is responsible for making the final decision said: "In light of residents' concerns and discussions with highway officers, it has been decided to undertake a more in-depth and robust traffic assessment along with possible associated measures."

The study is set to begin in February/March.
