HOMEMAKERS Community Recycling in Abergavenny recently came to the rescue of former soldier Jason Clements after he moved into his new home in Chepstow.

Mr Clements who was discharged from the army for medical reasons following service in Afghanistan found he was unable to afford to furnish his new home after moving from temporary accommodation in Abergavenny. His support worker put him in touch with Homemakers who were able to help him through its hardship scheme.

The scheme was founded last year and is supported by local town councils, Caldicot, Chepstow, Monmouth, Brynmawr and Tredegar along with charitable trusts and Monmouthshire Council's Welsh Church Act Fund.

The scheme works on a referral system and due to limited funds allocated to the project each case is considered on merit. Worthy applicants are then provided with free furniture to get them started and back on their feet after being made homeless.

Mr Clements said "Without Homemakers I would have been in a worse situation as I had no bed or sofa. I am just so grateful to them. I am now helping Homemakers raise the awareness of their collections in Chepstow by delivering leaflets as a way of saying thank you."
