A woman from Caldicot says volunteering for St David's Hospice has been a 'revelation' and is urging others to follow in her footsteps.

Kay Brown began volunteering with St David's Hospice two years ago, regularly volunteering in the evenings and at weekend events. She said: "About two years ago, within the space of a week, I found myself out of work and I also lost someone very close to me through cancer.

"I'm not one for sitting around doing nothing and felt I needed something to channel my energies into - volunteering seemed the obvious choice."

She added: "I approached St David's Hospice because I felt that I wanted to give something back."

Kay, who now works two and half days on reception in the Newport headquarters, said volunteering has been a 'revelation'.

She added: "The reason I give so much time to St David's is because I genuinely enjoy what I do. St David's is a brilliant organisation to be a part of. Anyone looking to volunteer should come and spend some time with us. I am confident they will go away feeling slightly in awe of what we do and be very eager to come back."

Kris Broome, of St David's Hospice said: "We're indebted to people such as Kay who are unstinting in their efforts on behalf of the charity. St. David's Hospice provides patients with real choices about where they receive their care and where they choose to spend their final days.

"Naturally this has financial implications for the charity. It costs approximately £5.5 million each year to provide these services, and we receive less than 18 per cent of this funding from the statutory sector."
