A montage of ceramic tiles depicting the history of Tintern was unveiled at the Abbey Mill last week during a special presentation.

Five years ago, local ceramicist Cllr Ned Heywood and officers from the Overlooking the Wye project came up with the idea of inviting local youngsters to take part in creating a montage of ceramic tiles to celebrate the history of Tintern and its former industry.

Almost two years ago, pupils from Chepstow Comprehensive School began designing and creating the tiles with the help of Cllr Heywood.

Speaking to the Free Press Cllr Heywood said: "Initially we went to the school to give a presentation on what we were interested in doing and asked the students for their ideas.

"Pupils came down to my pottery workshop in Chepstow and created the molds and we fired them up before they were returned to the school where they were later glazed.

"The youngsters showed a lot of enthusiasm. It's great to be able to give young people the opportunity to take part in individual art projects."

Chepstow School's Head of Art, Judith Lowery added: "We are all very pleased with the outcome and the pupils were thrilled to take part in the project. The texture design was created by pupils who at the beginning were in Year 8 and the Years 9,10,11 created the pictorial designs which include abstract motifs of Tintern Abbey and other events from local history."

She added: "One pupil said what she loved most about the project was learning how many great historic facts and places there are on her doorstep."
