Two Monmouthshire competitors at the Chelsea Flower Show have come away with prizes.

A young florist from Abergavenny won silver at the show, while Penhow Nurseries, who already had eight gold awards from Chelsea, walked away with their ninth.

Charlotte Cooke, aged 25, says she is shocked with winning silver at her third appearance at the show.

Miss Cooke, whose floral expertise is put to excellent use at Hilary's Floral Design on Cross Street, Abergavenny, wowed judges with her creativity and unique blends of colour.

She said: "'I am thrilled to take silver. I was so sure I wouldn't win, but to go and grab second place- well I'm lost for words.

"My family were fantastic support as ever, and the show did not disappoint either."

The art and design graduate has worked at the family shop since its opening in 2005 and has already won a number of competitions for her work.

Pleased with their gold award was Penhow Nurseries, the biggest diascia and nemesia specialist breeding company in the world.

Managing director David Jones said: "We were awarded our ninth gold award and we will be returning next year to try for a tenth.

"The weather this year has made everything slow in terms of flowering, but for us it didnÕt make that much of an impact as the plants are able to flower even when it is cold."

Their display at the show was made up of 54 show bowls displaying the plants that come in a range of colours that flower for seven months.

He added: "The show is a great opportunity for us to educate people about the plants. When the show opened thankfully the weather picked up and it was as successful as it has been in previous years."

The trade stands at the show, which ended on Saturday, include Border Sundials, Abergavenny, and British Plant Nursery Guide, Monmouth.
