NINE Monmouthshire health workers canoed 100 miles down the River Wye to raise money for charity.
The ‘Wye women’ started the St David’s Hospice Care fundraiser from Glasbury on September 3 and reached the Old Ferry Inn, Beachley, Chepstow, four days later. The group, which includes Tracy Collins, Pauline Batty, Lorraine Williams and Wendy James, has raised £740 of a £1,000 target.
Monmouth Canoe Hire supported the event, which took in Byecross, Lucksall, Brockweir and Tintern.
Thewomen, whowork as occupational therapists and physiotherapists in Monnow Vale, had little or no experience of canoeing before their successful trip.
Two of them provide end of life care for St David’s, which is why they chose to fundraise for the charity. Pauline, 52, said the trip made her see the river from a different perspective, taking in the wildlife and dealing with challenging rapids. “We were absolutely delighted with how it went and it was the most exhilarating thing I have ever done,” she said.
Her husband Mel added: “Iwas really impressed with them, it was very brave.”
