More bids for new Abergavenny bridge

MORE designs and consultation for a replacement footbridge over the River Gavenny in Abergavenny will be carried out.

Monmouthshire council said it will take another look at a replacement for the Castle Meadows footbridge after tenders for groundworks and ramps were higher than expected.

Previous inspections of the bridge revealed serious structural problems leaving it beyond economic repair. The council has revised the scheme so Flood Defence Consent from Environment Agency Wales is needed, meaning a further delay.

The council said it will publicise the revised timescale for the project when it is known.

Cabinet member for environment, Giles Howard said: “The council fully recognises the inconvenience to residents and visitors caused by lack of a bridge and remains wholly committed to its replacement.”
