Newport Galvanizers has played a key role in the multi-million pound refurbishment of a 115-year-old pier in South Wales.

The firm, one of 14 Wedge Group Galvanizing plants in the UK, has galvanized 240 tonnes of steel on behalf of Centregreat Engineering Ltd as part of a major refurbishment and restoration of the Mumbles RNLI lifeboat station in Swansea.

The project saw the plant provide its hot-dip galvanizing treatment to the station’s tipping cradle, static span and slipway, before the renovated station officially opened earlier this year – part of a major investment across the region.

Due to the station being Grade II Listed, the restoration was commissioned to make use of the existing pier, and also provide a more suitable launch for the RNLI's bigger Tamar class boat.

Mike Small, sales manager at Newport Galvanizers, said: “We were delighted to support Centregreat Engineering with the refurbishment of the Mumbles Lifeboat station, an iconic structure in Swansea Bay. We’ve worked on a number of lifeboat station refurbishments over the past 10 years, and have supported Centregreat Engineering with other structures in Moelfre, Angle and Tenby.”

Gary Higginbottom, project manager at Centregreat Engineering Ltd, said: “We have enjoyed a successful relationship with the team at Newport Galvanizers for a number of years now, which is why we chose to commission the firm’s services for this exciting project. Galvanizing offers the perfect finish for steel, particularly in a marine environment where corrosion is sped up because of the damp atmosphere, it also provides us with the peace of mind that the steel will be maintenance free for many years to come.”

Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back more than 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
