Pupils at a Risca primary school have been learning about safety on construction sites after entering a poster competition launched by Morganstone, which is building a new social housing project in the area.

Children of all ages at Ty-Sign Primary School, in Risca, were encouraged to make posters about the importance of health and safety on building sites.

The competition is just one step that construction company Morganstone has made to ensure the development of these two to three bedroom homes goes as smoothly as possible.

Morganstone is carrying out this project in partnership with Charter Housing Association.

The three winners of the poster competition were presented with their prizes at a special school assembly, which local minister Reverend Marc Owen attended to show his support. Each of winner was awarded with loom bands and stationery by Ceri Harries, contracts manager at the Risca site.

He said: "We always make an effort to engage with the local community and often works with local schools. Ty-Sign Primary School is located close to the site and this provided an ideal opportunity for us to engage with the children to promote safety.”

The development is for Seren Group, an organisation that provides housing, support and additional services to the local community, and will see ten semi-detached houses introduced to the area. Morganstone expects work to be completed by December 2014 and the new homes will be available to rent through Charter Housing Association.

“The posters will be now be displayed at the site and we hope that this will get the entire local community involved in the construction process,” said Ceri.
