I really look forward to this time of year with the key Welsh events that take place – I thoroughly enjoyed the Royal Welsh Show and last week’s National Eisteddfod was a great event.

Both have become key dates in the diary and provide great opportunities for businesses across Wales and the farming and cultural communities to come together and share experiences. I have been going to both for a number of years or so and find it really interesting to step out of the normal working environment.

It is a chance to meet interesting business people and is great to catch up with these people in a convivial atmosphere and I also always enjoy stocking up on delicious Welsh produce too. The IoD was delighted to co-host a really enjoyable business reception at the Eisteddfod with Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cardiff and Vale College.

Our special guest was Edwina Hart, MBE, Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, who spoke very openly and candidly about the economy in Wales and a common theme at the event was how partnerships across sectors are key for our nation. The minister also spoke about how Further and Higher Education are key to employers. Everyone seemed to be in upbeat, optimistic mood, although this may have been helped by the blazing sunshine on the day.

It was good to see representatives from The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme at the reception – The Eisteddfod is very much about youngsters and Duke of Edinburgh is too. Although they are based in Brecon, the scheme is, of course, very active across Wales and Gwent.

It’s always a pleasure to visit the Eisteddfod and I have been attending whenever I can over the years. Being a Welsh learner, the event always reignites my desire to be a better Welsh learner. But one of the many great things about the Eisteddfod is that you don’t have to be a Welsh speaker to really join in and enjoy all the elements of a cultural festival.

Many of you may be heading off on holidays shortly - some of you might be reading this online. The holidays are a great time to recharge the batteries and after the great efforts that have gone into rebuilding business success and confidence after the economic challenges of the last few years; these holidays are thoroughly deserved. I hope you have a great break.
