The team at the recently opened South Wales Mainline Electrification office in Gold Tops, Newport, hasbeen collecting coats, jackets, gloves and toiletries to donate to the Newport Night Shelter.

During the coldest winter months, a group of Newport churches open their doors and hearts to welcome the city’s homeless in from the streets.

Stuart Johnson, the night shelter co-ordinator said: "We try to get to know our guests and tailor the support we offer to their individual needs. This can be very varied but, it may be as simple as lending a listening ear or providing clean, dry clothing. We are really grateful for the donations from the rail electrification team."

The office has more than 100 staff from Network Rail, ABC (Alstom, Babcock, Costain) Electrification and other companies. Dan Tipper, programme manager from Network Rail, said: "We try to help local charities wherever we work and, having recently established ourselves in Newport, we were keen to help local people. At this time of year, it’s important to remember those who are less fortunate and we were keen to lend our support to the night shelter."
