We’re coming up to the August Bank Holiday – the last bank hols of the summer.

Business Argus asked local business people if they had anything special planned for the last bank holiday of the summer? Do you think we should have more bank holidays spread throughout the year or are they just a pain for business people?

John Newell, director, Kingston Newell Estate Agents, Newport

We have opened on bank holidays for the last couple of years. It has proved to be a popular decision as house buyers take the opportunity to book in viewings when they are off work. We need to be flexible for our customers so we open on Bank Holidays and also arrange early evening home viewing appointments. The bank holidays could be spread a bit more evenly throughout the year but there again with wonderful Welsh weather you still wouldn’t be able to plan anything. Bank holidays might be a pain for some business people but for us they represent an opportunity to sell houses.

Jakko Brouwers, director, Morrello Clinic, Newport

The clinic will be closed on the bank holiday and my family and I are looking forward to quality time together after a very busy couple of months. The dates of the bank holidays are traditional and I don’t see any reason they should change. It is so important to take time off from work and bank holidays help extend the weekend providing us with opportunities to take advantage of the three of four day breaks.

Lianne Fieldhouse, practice manager, Budget Vets

We will be open over the bank holiday weekend as the care and treatment of animals is ongoing and accidents and illnesses cannot be planned. You are obviously aware of this when you enter the veterinary industry so you can’t complain. We all welcome time off with our friends and families and perhaps spreading the bank holidays out throughout the year would be beneficial as it gives you dates to look forward to.

Dan Smith, director, M4 Property Consultants, Newport

We will be closed this bank holiday. With two of our team having young families we will certainly be making the most of the long weekend away from the office. Holidays neither are or ever should be a pain for business people. You need time away to relax, give yourself a rest and enjoying your free time. We spend enough time working throughout the year so these days off should be cherished.
