GLAN Usk Primary School pupils have been preparing for St David’s Hospice Care Kolor Dash fun run by adding a little colour to their playground and to anyone standing nearby.

Western Power Distribution’s Todd James, a 21-year-old apprentice linesman from Risca, was the main target for the barrage of powder paint – although much of it landed on the Newport school children themselves.

The 11 Year 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils - eight girls and three boys - all had equal powder paint-related fun on the playground to publicise the charity fundraising event, which takes place next May at Tredegar Park.

Event organiser Gemma Carter, community events fundraiser at St David’s Hospice Care, was responsible for the launch at Glan Usk.

A former teaching assistant at the school, she said: “I wanted to share something special with the pupils, and what better than covering some of them in paint!

“We are very grateful to the head teacher, Jeff Beecher, for letting us cover some of his children and the playground in paint powder.”

WPD is the main sponsor of the event again for 2017, and Gemma said it would be wonderful to see some of the company’s staff taking part. “Perhaps Todd would like a rematch!”

WPD’s Karen Welch said: “We’re keen to do as much as we can to help St David’s Hospice Care. We were pleased that Todd, one of our apprentices, was able to come along and take part in the colourful launch event to publicise the Kolor Dash. He’s a really good sport, and we hope more of our staff can take part in May.”

Glan Usk Primary School pupil Niamh, aged 10, said: “I had an amazing time taking part today. I thought it was a really fun way to advertise the fundraising event. I really hope it will encourage lots of people to take part next year.

“I hope it raises lots of money as it is an important cause. It was a pleasure having Miss Carter back and for her to share some of her fundraising work with us.”

Fellow pupil Ffion, eight, said: “I felt really happy to have Miss Carter back at school. It was really fun and I enjoyed throwing paint at Todd and at my friends. It was fabulous.”

The dash is at Tredegar Park on Sunday, May 21, 2017. Entry is £15 per adult, £10 per child (under 16) and £30 for a family entry based on two adults and two children. For details call 01633 851051 or visit www.stdavidshospicecare.org.
