The labour market in Wales stood strong in November, with job postings increasing by 6.9 per cent.

This is according to the latest data from the UK’s leading independent job site, CV-Library, which compared its data from November 2016 to November 2015.

And while the increase in roles is positive news for local job hunters, Wales also witnessed a 6.4 per cent drop in salaries last month.

However, when comparing month on month data, salaries in Wales did actually increase by 1.2 per cent, which is positive considering that the national average dropped by 2.3 per cent.

Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: “Our latest data found that job postings were up all over the UK and it’s fantastic to see that Wales has experienced strong growth in this area.

"The fact that salaries are down could suggest that businesses are still slightly wary about investing in their workforce, though we may see this figure jump up in January as the New Year draws in.”

Applications were also down during this period, with Wales seeing a 5.7 per cent drop year-on-year and Cardiff witnessing a 14.2 per cent fall. When looking at the month-on-month data, however, applications in Wales did rise by 0.6 per cent which is positive given that candidate appetite does tend to be low at this time of year.

Biggins said: “Candidate appetite is always lower at this time of year, mainly because workers have other priorities on their mind in terms of Christmas and making it through to the end of the year. We expect to see application rates pick up again in January but it is important to note that Wales did stand stronger in this area than other areas of the UK, outpacing many other major cities and the overall national average.”
