A learner from Pontypool who changed career path to become a hairdresser collected the Rising Star Award at Wales’ premier hair and beauty event.

Kirsty Harris, 23, a foundation apprentice with Guy Christian in Cwmbran, received the award and £200 prize money at Salon Cymru, which attracted around 500 competitors and spectators to Y Plas, Cardiff University’s Students’ Union.

Salon Cymru is organised by Bridgend-based ISA Training, the largest independent hair and beauty training provider in Wales. Top hairdressing and beauty talent from across Wales attended the dynamic annual event in the capital to showcase their creative skills in eight competitions.

The Rising Star Award is presented annually by ISA Training’s chair Shirley Davis-Fox to one of the company’s learners who shows most potential in the competitions.

The award confirmed to Kirsty that she had made the right career decision. She had originally completed a foundation degree in forensic science before opting to change course and join the hair and beauty industry.

Kirsty, whose ambition is to become a colour technician, said: "It’s my first time at Salon Cymru and this award is great. My boss has said he is so proud of me and I am super-chuffed.

“I originally chose to become a forensic scientist but changed my mind after completing a foundation degree at Pontypool College. When I started working for Guy Christian, I realised I had made the right decision because I much rather the work.”
