Following the death of Gwent businessman David Bell in November last year, family and friends raised £1,400 for Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny, where he had been treated.

Mr Bell, the former managing director of Cwmbran-based Bell Hydraulics Ltd and a long time resident of Goytre, died after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis, which causes permanent scarring in the lungs and which recently took the life of TV personality Keith Chegwin.

For more than a decade Mr Bell received treatment and care at Nevill Hall Hospital under the supervision of pulmonary specialist Dr Deborah Wales.

In lieu of flowers at Mr Bell's funeral, the family asked for donations to Dr. Wales' pulmonary care unit based at the hospital.

The Rotary Club of Cwmbran Vale, of which Mr Bell was a long standing and active member, also decided to dedicate a memorial bench and the plant of an oak tree in David's name.

Mr Bell's daughter, Victoria, said: "The generosity of our family and dad's friends has been overwhelming.

"The money we raised for Dr Wales and the wonderful gesture from the Rotary Club speak volumes about the way Dad lived his life.

"Davey was a very popular and special person who touched the lives of so many people. We miss him but we are glad that his memory will live on in this community."
