ABP South Wales recently teamed up with Engineering Education Scheme Wales to host two ‘Girls into STEM’ visits at the ports of Cardiff and Newport.

The visits were arranged to mark Seafarers Awareness week, an annual celebration run by Seafarers UK. The theme of the week for 2018 was maritime employment opportunities, including shore-based jobs, with an emphasis on engineering.

A group of 14 Year 10 pupils from Lliswerry High School visited the Port of Newport.

Matthew Kennerley, director, ABP South Wales, said: “Our five ports in South Wales support more than 21,800 jobs nationally and cover a range of departments such as marine, operations, and engineering.

"We hope that the school visits we hosted during Seafarers Awareness Week helped to highlight how exciting and diverse the port environment is, while showcasing the opportunities that are available to the children within their local area.”

ABP South Wales worked with EESW to organise the visits through their ‘Girls into STEM’ programme. The programme connects schools with local companies to allow girls to gain an insight into engineering environments and to consider a career in related areas.

EESW is a non-profit, educational charity that was set up in 1989 to show young people the value of a career in engineering and its importance to the Welsh economy.
