Newport’s innovative Proton Beam Therapy Centre is one of the finalists in the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2018.

It is one of 12 projects from around the country vying for the Best Public Service Building title.

Project team Pravida Bau, John Weaver Construction Ltd, Atkins Global, Rutherford Cancer Centre and Newport City Council’s building control team won the South Wales and all-Wales stages to reach the grand finals.

The LABC Building Excellent Awards celebrate achievements in the construction industry and rewards excellent buildings, outstanding companies and partnerships.

Elements considered included high compliance with building regulations, effective working relationships with council building control surveyors, outstanding craftsmanship and sustainability.

The winner of the Best Public Service Building and the other categories will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 9.

Cllr Jane Mudd, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and housing, said: “I’m delighted that this excellent building project has reached the finals of this prestigious national competition which recognises and celebrates successful partnerships between the private and public sector.

“It demonstrates the extremely high standards that were achieved with the Proton Beam Therapy Centre. No matter what happens – and I will have my fingers crossed for them – they can be extremely proud of reaching the finals.”
