A MAN accused of the murder of three generations of the same family including his girlfriend told police he had plans to marry her.

In a police interview following his arrest, Carl Mills told police he had got engaged to girlfriend Kayleigh Buckley in August 2011 and said he had further plans for their relationship.

He said: "It was going to develop into more. When Kimberley got older, like five, we were going to marry then."

Mills, 28, of no fixed abode, is charged with the murder of Kayleigh Buckley, 17, their six-month old daughter Kimberley Buckley, and Kayleigh's mum Kim Buckley, 46.

They all died when a fire ripped through their home in Tillsland, Coed Eva, Cwmbran, on September 18, 2012.

Mills denies the charges.

Edited scripts of the police interviews with Mills in September 2012 were read out to the jury by Detective Constable John Crandon and prosecuting barrister Gregory Bull QC.

In them, Mills told police he had met Kayleigh on Facebook in 2010 and that they had got together in January 2011, just after Kayleigh's 16th birthday.

When asked about his feelings towards Kayleigh, he replied: "mainly in love."

He later added: "Kayleigh was just the one, that's it. The only one I want."

When asked about Kayleigh's pregnancy he said it was "kind of" a planned pregnancy.

He said: "She said she wanted kids but I wasn't bothered.

He added: "If she wanted kids then I was happy about it."

He said there was "paranoia" in the relationship as he said Kayleigh would think he was cheating on her if he did not answer calls or texts. He added he also thought Kayleigh might cheat on him.

But he added that when they were together, they were "happy really" and "having a laugh".

He said: "We were happy, holding hands, like a normal couple really."

The court heard Mills had answered all questions in his interviews following his arrest up until an interview at 8.26pm on September 20 when he read a statement saying he had answered every question and given a full account of his movements and felt exhausted and confused about what was being asked of him. He said he would be making no further comment in interview.
