MORE than 350 people have signed a petition to object to plans to create a temporary car park while the remodelling of Magor Primary School goes ahead.

Monmouthshireís head of planning control David Swanson told the county planning committee that the work would not mean any increase in pupil or staff numbers.

He said planning permission was not needed for the temporary car park which appeared to be the main bone of contention with objectors.

He said a study showed the school has an inadequate hall and dining facilities, below standard classroom sizes, an inadequate entrance and staff accommodation and although the extensions will bring the school closer to neighbouring properties, it is not considered this will be harmful to them.

Magor with Undy community council recommended approval but members expressed their concern over the use of the footpath by cars, children, pedestrians and cyclists.

One member of the planning committee Cllr Giles Howard queried whether the plans were accurate and asked for a site visit to clarify the layout.

Cllr David Dovey said he also found the plans very difficult to follow.

He criticised the education authority for putting in the plans at the last minute, so any deferment by the planning committee could delay work starting on the project.

Cllr James Harris said he felt bitter that he had not been consulted by the LEA as the local member and asked for more consultation in future.

Cllr Roger Harris said he shared those reservations about the LEA and said matters needed sorting out for the sake of the children.

It was agreed a site visit should be held before a decision is made.
