AFTER a successful step-back in time last weekend, Caldicot Castle is planning further historical themed events throughout September.
The bank-holiday weekend saw Queen Victoria’s Army descend to the castle where they recreated life at the time of the Zulu and Boer Wars.
Visitors could meet the mock-up army and watch them train for battle.
The demonstrations were led by the 1879 group (24th regiment of foot and 2nd Warwickshire Regiment) whose members included relatives of the original members of the army.
Event co-ordinator, Danny Tulley, said, “We wanted to raise awareness of the history of this era, and let people know how connected Wales was to this battle.
"From the success of the day we are returning to Newport in September, to dedicate the grave of a soldier who fought in the Zulu wars."
The demonstrations were very well received, and the surroundings of the castle was the perfect setting for the event.
Caldicot Castle is continuing on the historical theme with a Medieval Extravaganza with medieval market stalls, history displays and a dramatic battle on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September, from 11am-5pm. Prices are £2.50 and £1.50 for concessions.
A Medieval Mystery History Tour for children will also be running throughout September, free of charge.
