Historic buildings get Assembly cash

TWO historic buildings in Monmouthshire have won grants for essential repairs and maintenance work from the Welsh Assembly.

St Bridget's Church, Skenfrith, and the The Savoy Theatre, Church Street, Monmouth, have won £130,000 and £39,300 from the Historic Building Grants fund respectively.

Both buildings are listed with Welsh heritage body Cadw.

The Savoy Theatre in Monmouth is the oldest theatre in Wales and is a rare example of a small cinema from the intra-war period in Wales.

The cash will be offered towards the cost of repairs to the front elevation of the building.

Meanwhile the medieval St Bridget's Church in Skenfrith will be offered the funds for repairs to its roof, drainage and masonry.

The grants are part of a total of £999,124 worth of funding announced this week for 24 historic buildings in Wales.
