Hundreds say farewell to Abergavenny taxi driver

MORE than 200 people attended the funeral of Abergavenny taxi driver Mel Morgan, 65, at St Mary’s Priory Church on Monday.

The grandfather-of-seven, who died suddenly on July 17 after a heart attack, was a well-known taxi driver in the town for 24 years.

The Reverend John Plessis, who led the service, described Mr Morgan as a man who was admired and respected by all those whose lives he touched.

Mr Morgan, of Victoria Street, was born in Ebbw Vale and attended Glyncoed School. After leaving school he worked at the steelworks before joining the army.

After a three-year posting in Hong Kong he came back to Abergavenny and married Carol in 1968.

The couple had three children, Julian, Donna and the late Stephen.

Mr Morgan became a taxi driver in 1986 working for Lewis Taxi’s before setting up Mel’s taxi’s.

Mourners sang the hymns Abide With Me and The Lord’s My Shepherd.

Family friend and taxi driver, Rob Shephard read the poem “The life of a Taxi Driver” and Mr Morgan’s grandson Ross Morgan read a tribute to his beloved “Bampy”.

Former taxi driver, Reg Waldron performed a moving rendition of Amazing Grace on the Clarinet and the service ended with The Glory of Love by Peter Cetera played over the loud speaker.

As a tribute to their friend, ten local taxi’s followed the cortege from the church to the Gwent Crematorium.

He leaves wife Carol, children Julian and Donna and grandchildren Rhys, Ross, Luke, Lauren, Abbie, Leah and Tia.
