A MONMOUTH woman and her late husband who dedicated their time to nursing horses and ponies back to health were recognised for their work at a London awards ceremony.

Jenny MacGregor was presented with an award of recognition by The British Horse Society's president Martin Clunes, for her charity work with husband Alasdair.

The Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies began in 1973, when its founder, Sheila Richards, started to save foals which would have been exported for slaughter.

The MacGregors helped Mrs Richards from the start and in the mid-1980s Jenny MacGregor took over as chairwoman and over time the society's work gradually changed.

It is now an equine hospital, at St Maughans, near Monmouth, taking in sick, injured or abused animals, rehabilitating them and finding them new homes.

Up until Mr MacGregor's death in 2010, the couple worked together tirelessly.

Mrs MacGregor said: "I was very thrilled to have my husband included because we worked for so many years together and if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be doing it now."
