THESE are the images showing what the new multi-million pound Caldicot School is expected to look like.

Monmouthshire council hopes to complete the £34.9 million secondary school, along with another in Monmouth, by 2016.

Caldicot Town Team’s chairman Aaron Reeks said of the plans: “They look absolutely amazing. The Town Team is really pleased. It is going to transform that whole area and give the school what it deserves. It is really going to push it into the 21st century.

“I am sure the kids are going to love it. It is going to be a huge boost for Caldicot.”

The school has improved greatly from being given the Welsh Government’s lowest possible ranking to one of the best in Gwent in two years, the Argus reported in January when it received its positive Estyn inspection.

The school will be rebuilt as part of Monmouthshire council’s 21st Century Schools programme and as part of the plans, the council said it hopes to raise attainment, aspirations and opportunities within the community and ensure the county is a centre of excellence for teaching.

The school's most recent Estyn report praised its performance in English and maths at GCSE level and pupils' good behaviour, while Welsh second language was described as "very good".

Head teacher Susan Gwyer-Roberts and her senior management team were praised for "strong and effective leadership" with performance "closely monitored".

The school’s renovation is part of £81.5 million investment – half coming from Monmouthshire council and the other half from Welsh Government – to replace the schools in Monmouth and Caldicot and also to build a new £4.7 million primary school in Raglan.
