MONMOUTHSHIRE’S first Access for All forum saw 70 people pack out the council’s chamber in Usk to discuss problems that people with disabilities face.

The forum, held onThursday, September 11, was organised by Monmouthshire County Council and equalities organisation Monmouthshire Voices to offer people with disabilities the chance to influence services, policies and decisions that affect them.

On the agenda were the issues of street obstructions such as A-boards and chairs set up outside food outlets, the condition of pavements and awareness of accessible paths in public parks.

Participants debated disabled parking charges and whether people felt fully informed about the issue. It was agreed that the council would improve its consultation and engage with groups within the forum.

Pennie Walker, of Monmouthshire Voices, said: “I’m so glad that this initial forum was such a success and it gave disabled people the opportunity for their voices to be heard. I look forward to working on future forums with the council.”

Cabinet member for equalities Cllr Phil Hobson said: “The council is keen to hear from people with disabilities or from those who work with or care for them so it can plan for the future and ensure that needs are met appropriately.”
