A HUSBAND and wife duo will celebrate their first year running a Tintern cafe tomorrow.

Vin and Lou Kennedy, who live in St Arvans, have run The Filling Station Cafe on Main Road since January 27 last year.

Mr Kennedy, an electrician by trade, said he decided to take a further interest in the cafe when he cycled past it in the summer of 2013.

He said: “We have seen the business grow month on month. We know how to make a cup of coffee. We try to do the basics well: paninis, baguettes and sandwiches.”

He added that it is a popular stop for cyclists riding around the Wye Valley.

And Mr Kennedy said the couple have opened the cafe for the first time over the winter. Typically it would have closed in the autumn and re-opened in the spring.

Married with three children, Mr Kennedy is originally from London while Mrs Kennedy is from Cardiff. They met when Mrs Kennedy was studying in the capital and moved to St Arvans in 1999.

The cafe is currently open every day except Tuesday but will be open seven days a week in the summer.
