THE campaign to raise £20,000 to explore setting up a walkway station in Magor received a welcome boost from new landlords in the village who donated £500 to the project.

Louise Jones and Garth Davis took over The Golden Lion in The Square on Christmas Eve last year and Ms Jones said “the feedback has been absolutely fantastic” from punters since then.

And she said of their donation to MAGOR (Magor Action Group on Rail): “I have lived in Magor all my life and was brought up in Redwick. [The walkway station] would be great for all of us.”

While she said their food has gone down a storm since they took over, adding: “If you don’t book on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday we have to turn you away.”

Ms Jones worked at Magor Primary School for 15 years and said she is now keen to do more things within the community, as well as running the pub with her partner.

Currently the campaign has just under three weeks to run to find another £18,000 to launch a feasibility study into a walkway station to serve Magor and Undy. The project ends on March 2 and it must have all the money pledged by the end of that day.

Yesterday (Tues) it had raised £2,960, or 15 per cent, of its total.
