IT’S full speed ahead for a bid to restore a rail station which was closed down exactly 50 years ago.

Monmouthshire council has backed moves to bring a station back to Magor and Undy after the ones serving the villages closed in 1965 as part of the Beeching Cuts.

The Magor Action Group on Rail (MAGOR) was established two years ago and wants to raise £20,000 as part of a crowdfunding project for a feasibility study into the station.

Donors must make pledges before next Sunday and the £20,000 must be reached for them to take the money.

Monmouthshire council’s cabinet member with responsibility for transport Cllr Bryan Jones said: “We support the aims of the group to restore rail transport to the Magor with Undy area and its use of crowd funding to raise money for a feasibility study is in accordance with the council’s philosophy of communities coming together for mutual benefit. I have met with officials of the Welsh Government and raised the matter with them.”

People who want to donate but not online can call the treasurer Julie Wilson on 07790 842097.
