A MOTHER has warned other parents to be vigilant after her seven-year-old son was approached by an elderly woman who attempted to entice him away in Caldicot town centre.

Donovan Barker, seven, was approached outside Greggs on Newport Road on August 8 around 1.15pm by a woman in her 60s, his mother Liz Convery, said.

The 39-year-old said she was in the town centre with 'Donny', two friends, her husband and his six year-old daughter, when the incident happened.

She said: “This woman bent over the bins. She came down to Donny's eye level and said 'come on darling, let’s go and find your brothers.'”

“I thought at first maybe she had mistaken him for another child but there were no other children at all. 'Donny' didn’t go with her and she went off in the direction of Jubilee Way car park.”

She added: “'Donny' was so close to us I would say less than five feet away – it’s quite frightening really.”

Mrs Convery said 'Donny' has two brothers and that detail could have persuaded him to go with the woman. She said:”He was quite frightened after the incident but he’s okay now." We’ve told him how proud we are of him.I think it really put home the message of stranger danger.”

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said officers attended but a search for the woman proved fruitless.

Mrs Convery said: “I just want to warn other parents to keep an eye out. In a small village like this you presume everybody knows everybody.”

She said the woman was mid to late 60s, white and medium built.
