RAGLAN Day returned for the first time since the 1980's today with more than 1,000 people joining in the fun.

The family fun day, which was finished in 1985, was held last year as part of the Raglan music festival but this year it returned to its original format as a separate event.

The rain held off as more than 1,000 people young and old turned up to Raglan Sports Fields, on Station Road, to see the floats, stalls and entertainment including a bouncy castle.

Five floats took part in the parade – the Raglan Young Farmers, a castle by Raglan 1st Scouts, Raglan Women’s Institute, Raglan Junior Football and a pony and trap in a country theme by Wendy Williams and her family.

Festival king and queen Joseph Hynes and Jessica James led the parade in a classic Crosley convertible. A US humvee tank from the Usk Tank School followed behind and said they found themselves "under fire" from water bombs from the Raglan 1st Scouts.

Eleri Rosier, one of the organisers, said: “We are resurrecting. It is a success, definitely. People are streaming in.”

Colwyn Knight, Raglan Festival Committee Chair, said: “Having received so much positive feedback from the inaugural funday as part of Raglan Music Festival last year, we decided to rebrand this in its original format as Raglan Day.”

Mary Egan, from the Tank School, said: “The organisers are magnificent. There’s a great sense of community in Raglan.”

Judging the floats and fancy dress was Monmouthshire Councillor Penny Jones and Nick Ramsay AM.
