A CAMPAIGN to keep the Post Office in Magor has now been backed by more than 1,400 people and is seeking the support of Monmouthshire council.

Cllr Frances Taylor, member for Mill ward, started a petition to keep the service in its current form which has now been signed by more than 1,400 people with one more petition due to be collected. It states that the service is under threat as a direct result of the Post Office Limited’s "Network Transformation Process."

The current postmistress is due to leave the post in January and it is understood there is no replacement for her or her business. She is now calling on Monmouthshire council and its leader Cllr Peter Fox to support the campaign.

Cllr Taylor will be asking the question to cllr Fox at the full council meeting on Thursday.

She is asking him to agree to write to Post Office Limited and Baroness Neville-Rolf DBE CMG Parliamentary Under secretary of State and Minister for Intellectual Property on behalf of local residents to facilitate open and transparent dialogue.

Cllr Taylor said: "I wrote a question to Cllr Fox first of all to keep it on the agenda and to ask the county council's support because it is a real important issue in Magor.

"I'm asking him to write to Baroness Neville-Rolf to draw attention to the facts and recognise that Magor is an exception and doesn't fit into the classification."

Cllr Taylor said the said Magor doesn't fit the organisation's one size fits all approach.

A Post Office spokesman has previously said they are committed to retaining Post Office services in Magor and their field team is working hard to identify ways which will enable them to provide a service in the future.

A Post Office representative is due to meet the campaign group last night and Cllr Taylor said she hoped the representative would give them an indication of the plans for the future of the service in Magor.
