MONMOUTH MP David Davies waded into a row over asylum seekers in Cardiff being issued colour wristbands to denote they were entitled to food.

The private firm that houses asylum seekers on Newport Road in Cardiff, Clearsprings Ready Homes, has said the policy has ended after the controversy.

Labour’s shadow justice minister and the MP for Cardiff Central Jo Stevens said she had “grave concerns” at the practices at Lynx House.

But Mr Davies said the argument had been promoted by the “pro-immigration, break down the borders brigade” and was a fuss over nothing.

He gave an interview to talk radio station LBC on Monday and said he stood by his comments.

Mr Davies said that he had been made to wear wristbands on holiday and saw no problem with being asked to – and lashed out over comparisons to Jews being made to wear a Star of David in Nazi Germany.

Over one of the asylum seekers complaining over being made to wear the red bands, he added: “A gentleman has come over here, welcomed by the generosity of the British taxpayers, given good accommodation and been offered three square meals a day. All that's been asked of him in return is that he wears a wristband.

“I don't think it's a big ask and to compare it to Nazi Germany is an insult frankly to the six million Jews and the millions who were killed by the Nazis.

“If wearing a little red wristband to get free meals and walk ten minutes to a centre is the worst thing that's ever happened to him...then he doesn't have a valid asylum claim and shouldn't be here,” he said.

“If you feel that strongly about it, wear a jumper.”
