A RENOWNED poet from Abergavenny is among the “exceptional” nominees for the 2016 St David Awards.

The awards, now in their third year, acknowledge the extraordinary achievements of people in Wales.

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones announced the nominees at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay last week.

In the culture category, Abergavenny poet Owen Sheers has been nominated for his work as both a poet and writer.

His first collection of poetry, The Blue Book, was shortlisted for the Welsh Book of the Year and the Forward Prize Best 1st Collection in 2001.

He was also the first ever artist in residence for the Welsh Rugby Union, with his resulting work of non-fiction, Calon, published in 2013.

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones said: “Once again the finalists in our St David Awards are an exceptional group of people. It’s going to be tough to choose the winners; every one of them is a credit to Wales.

“I’d like to thank all those who nominated in this year’s awards, you’ve put forward some fantastic people. I look forward to marking their achievements at the main awards ceremony in March.”

The St David Awards main presentation, when winners will be announced, will take place at the Senedd, in Cardiff Bay, on Thursday, March 10.
