THE Welsh Liberal Democrats have pledged to fight climate change if they win a majority in May’s Assembly election.

The party has launched a five-point plan including eliminating greenhouse gas emissions and generating all electricity from renewable sources by 2050 as well as halving energy used in heating and electricity generation by 2030.

The group has also pledged to increase cycling rates by 10 per cent by 2025 and 25 per cent by 2015 and halt the loss of biodiversity by 2020.

Mid and West Wales AM William Powell described climate change as “the biggest threat facing our planet”.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats know that Wales needs to play its part in fighting it,” he said.

“We must aim for zero-net emissions to win the fight against climate change and repay the historical debt from our industrial legacy.

“It is time for fresh ambition and leadership. Strong decisive actions need to be taken right now.

“Tackling climate change shouldn’t just be seen as an obligation, but more as an opportunity to build a stronger, greener economy here in Wales.”
