MONMOUTH MP David Davies has leant his name to a petition calling on BT’s “monopoly” of the broadband network to be broken up.

The Conservative MP has joined with more than 120 other cross-party members in signing a report claiming 5.7 million people across the UK do not receive the minimum expected download speeds of 10 megabits per second.

Mr Davies said: “Fast broadband should be a reality in all our communities yet, sadly, this is not the case.

“Throughout Monmouthshire residents and local businesses are dealing with some appalling connections and gaps in services.

“In fact, the Monmouth constituency falls into the bottom 10 per cent of seats for average download speeds.”

Communications regulator Ofcom is investigating and is expecting to publish its findings within weeks.
