GWENT Police are appealing for information after 33 vehicles were damaged along Western Avenue in Bulwark, Chepstow.

The offence happened sometime between Sunday, May 29 and Tuesday, May 31.

A resident's CCTV camera captured footage of a young woman walking along the street who police would like to speak to.

The cars were reportedly scratched with a key or a similarly sharp object, including a car belonging to resident Terry Jones.

Both Mr Jones and his wife Pat were away when the incident occurred and were told by a neighbour upon their return.

He said: "We were away when it happened. It was a shock.
"I'd say ours had the deepest scratches that we've seen".
According to Mr Jones, he has been told the damage will cost a minimum of £300 to repair.

While he is covered by insurance, he fears that the spate of vandalism along the street could lead to higher insurance policies for residents living on the road in the future.

Pamela Jones, another resident, who was unaffected by the incident, said that she had recently seen children throwing stones at the windows of houses along the street.

Chepstow town councillor Dale Rooke, who lives in Bulwark, said: "I just can’t understand the mentality of these people who are really doing pure and simple vandalism.

"It's something that does happen regularly. We get reports of wing mirrors getting kicked off or doors getting damaged."

Cllr Rooke also believes the town's "weekend economy" has an impact on way people behave when they're returning home.

He added: "For some reason these people take it out on inanimate objects and shop windows. It's absolutely crazy."

Gwent Police Sergeant Nigel Callard said: "We are asking local residents to be vigilant following this spate of criminal damage on vehicles in the Chepstow area.

"This is a serious incident and has had a big impact on those affected by having their cars damaged.

"We are continuing to do all we can to find who is responsible. Officers are carrying out more patrols and house to house enquiries in the area."
