MORE THAN 300 people attended a choral concert featuring three Monmouthshire choirs at Caldicot Castle last weekend.

The event, hosted by TV presenter Alex Jones, served as a fundraiser for the upcoming Monmouthshire and District National Eisteddfod in Abergavenny.

The national event, which takes place comes from July 29 to August 6, is expected to attract over 150,000 visitors to the county.

Choirs from Caldicot, Chepstow and Monmouth joined to perform together alongside Welsh tenor Wynne Evans at the 'Choirs at the Castle' event on Saturday.

The evening included performances of Welsh traditional favourites such as Calon Lân, Men of Harlech and many other well-known numbers.

Mr Evans, most-known for his role on the GoCompare adverts, performed solo renditions of several songs before joining the choirs in a rousing finale of Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.

Leader of Monmouthshire County Council, Peter Fox said: “This eagerly-awaited concert exhibited Welsh choral singing and culture at its best and was obviously enjoyed by everyone in such a magical setting.

"There’s no doubt that Caldicot’s castle is an ideal venue for events of this nature and I look forward to more occasions like this.

He added: "The National Eisteddfod visits Abergavenny next month and will be a fabulous opportunity for Monmouthshire’s residents to enjoy similar stellar performances on their doorstep."
