A FAMILY from Monmouthshire who won over £60million from a lucky lottery ticket have talked about their life-changing win.

The five-member family syndicate from the Monmouthshire area are the latest UK winners to land the EuroMillions jackpot, winning a total of £61.1million.

At an event at The Celtic Manor Resort, mother Sonia Davies, 53, described how she rang her daughter from Florida after receiving a tumour operation.

The mum was with partner Keith Reynolds and “feeling lucky” after the successful keyhole surgery, asking daughter Stephanie Davies to enter the draw.

The winning ticket was bought from the Overmonnow Garage, Cinderhill Street, Monmouth by the 23-year-old sales executive, who realised the family had hit the jackpot on Sunday morning.

“I came back downstairs to find (boyfriend) Steve and couldn’t take my hand away from my mouth in shock. I kept saying ‘we’ve won and I’m not joking’, she said.

“We locked all our windows and doors and spoke in hushed voices just in case someone could hear that we had won. It was all very MI6 — very secret service.”

Desperate to share the news, Stephanie called her mum who was waiting to board her delayed flight home.

Ms Sonia Davies said: “We put them on speaker phone so Keith and I could listen but realised everyone in the airport could hear so we huddled round a bin while we checked the numbers and realised we really had won.

“I can remember saying if we don’t make it home just make sure you spend it all. It was the longest flight of our life.”

Winners include Stephanie Davies, 23, her boyfriend Steve Powell, 30, sister Courtney, 19, their mother Sonia Davies, 53, and Sonia’s partner, company director Keith Reynolds, 55.

The jackpot winning family syndicate will split the winnings with each member receiving a £12,220,488.58 share.

Stephanie and Steve, who bought their first home together at Christmas, want to spend money decorating their home and take a trip to the Caribbean, while Sonia and Keith are looking forward to sharing the win with family and friends.

University of Southampton student, Courtney Davies, 19, plans to complete her degree before deciding what to do next. Next on her list are an electric toothbrush and a car to replace her VW Fox.

Despite becoming millionaires overnight, the family described themselves as very “close knit” and don’t believe the win will change them.

Mr Reynolds added: “It won’t change us. It will just give us the opportunity to help friends and family around us.”

“The biggest thing for me with my job is not having the pressure to work as much or as hard,” he added.

Ms Sonia Davies said that it might change their lives “slightly”.

“The holidays will be slightly better and long haul will definitely be business class but that’s about as far as we’ve thought,” she said.

“You always have that dream of when you win what are you going to buy but when you actually get it you don’t really want or need any of it. It’s about the fun of dreaming about it.”

Sonia and Stephanie also revealed that they will be making private donations to two charities. that are “very close to their hearts”.
