AN UNDY man who nearly lost his life after a motocross accident has been helping to clean up his community by offering free landscaping.

Kristian Gibbons, 28, was competing with his team at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk when he suffered a crash on his bike.

Despite being able to walk away from the accident, Mr Gibbons began to feel stomach pains on the trip back home.

However he was soon left fighting for his life after a burst bowel led to complications with his Crohn's disease.

"I was taken to the A&E and within a week I had six operations and was put on a ventilator in intensive care," said Mr Gibbons.

"I went into the hospital at 14 stone and left weighing seven and a half stone.

"The [Royal] Gwent get a lot of bad publicity but their staff kept me alive."

Mr Gibbons said that while the impact of the crash did some damage to his body, he believes his Crohn's disease had a hand in his near-death experience.

He has lived with the illness for three years, which he says has affected both his work and personal life.

He said: "Last year was a complete write-off for me but I also want to help others in the area with Crohn's, who are going through the same as me."

In his recovery Mr Gibbons has returned to his work as a self-employed landscape gardener for his own business KG Gardens.

He was approached by Ross Howen, admin of the Caldicot community Facebook page, who proposed the idea of community work.

Since then KG Gardens, along with local volunteers, have cleared several footpaths of overgrown trees in Caldicot and surrounding areas.

Mr Gibbons said: "At the end of the day, we're a small business trying to get bigger and it's always nice to put something back into the community."

Along the community jobs, the company has since received several paid contracts which indicates that business is flourishing.

One such customer, Bob Watling, commended Mr Gibbons on his hard-working ethic despite having medical issues.

Mr Watling added that Mr Gibbons had been treating his nine-year-old granddaughter, who suffers from Aspergers, go-karting at an indoor professional track.

Mr Watling said: "She loves it and secretly so does Kristian. You could not wish to meet a more dedicated guy to whatever he does."
