AROUND 900 people helped to raise £3,500 for local charities after taking part in a fundraising run held in Chepstow.

The Chepstow Stampede, now in its third year, saw attendees of all ages take part in courses of varying distances at Piercefield Park and Chepstow Racecourse on Saturday.

Racers had to endure various obstacles on the 5k and 10k courses including manmade horse hurdles, ditches, and mud pits, as well as steep banks and having to wade through waist-deep water.

A Mini-Stampede, launched last year, saw more than 100 youngsters aged between five and 13 years old take on a smaller course.

All funds raised by the Stampede went to Breast Cancer Care Cymru, the ABF – The Soldiers’ Charity and Prostate Cymru.

Venue sales manager Alison Durston hailed the event as a success, and one that is growing by each passing year.

"Overall it was a success, with our teams on the 5k and 10k course doing very well," said Ms Durston.

"We did well with our fundraising as did the competitors, who were running for their own individual charities."

The first ever Chepstow Stampede in 2014 saw 250 people take on the challenge to raise money for Kidney Research UK.

Last year's event saw the launch of the Mini-Stampede, a 1.6k course which is open to children aged give to nine, and 10 to 13 years old.

Ms Durtson said: "We had more than 100 youngsters in our Mini-Stampede this year which was great.

"It's really nice to see so many local youngsters getting involved with outdoor activities."
