HUNDREDS of cycling Santas joined in with the festivities at Abergavenny's annual Christmas lights switch on.

The bearded bikers, made up of members of Abergavenny Road Club, rode through the high street just behind Father Christmas himself and Mrs Claus

People of all ages were kept entertained by dance competitions, snow machines, prizes and an attempt to create the town's "largest ever conga line".

The Mayor and Mayoress of Abergavenny, Councillors Chris and Sheila Woodhouse, were joined on the stage by the family of double Olympic silver medalist Becky James.

The former King Henry VIII School pupil and Abergavenny native was sadly absent from the proceedings but her parents David and Christina, younger sisters and grandfather were on hand to do the honours.

Cllr Woodhouse said that he was thankful for the "very humble" James family for taking their time out to attend.

Speaking about the event, he said: “It’s been an overwhelming success, everything was just superb.

“We had around 110 cycling Santas in the end and they’ve said that they’re already keen to do it again next year.”
