A CHEPSTOW sixth form student raised more than £1,000 for a mental health charity by holding a fundraising concert.

Rosie Levy, 17, came up with the idea as a way to shed light on the struggles of young people suffering with mental health.

Around 160 people turned out to the event at Chepstow Drill Hall to see Miss Levy, among several other musical and dramatic talents from the area, perform.

The Wyedean School pupil, who played songs from Disney films and compositions by Ludovico Einaudi on piano, said: "It was a real success, it was absolutely packed with people of all ages,

"When I was performing it didn't feel like I was standing in front of loads of people, these were the local community, they created a nice atmosphere."

Other acts who performed on the night include the Chepstow Musical Youth Theatre, who sang an array of songs from modern musicals and students from the Dell Superstar Singing Club.

Ceira Moulton, Josh Hicks, Nataley Simpson, Nikkita Miller all did vocal solos while Josh Hicks and Sophie Hayward entertained the audience with Latin and ballroom dancing.

The stage was also shared by harpist Sephy Canty and Ellis Fryer, who performed a piano and flute solo.

The Angel School of Dance also gave a rendition of Meghan Trainor's "Me Too".

The event raised a total of £1030 for YoungMinds, a charity which aims to improve the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people.

It has also helped to support Miss Levy, who was diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder two years ago, said that she and her family have benefited from the support of the organisation.

Miss Levy said: "I found it all quite overwhelming, I didn't think it would create so much support. It shows a lot of people were willing to give up their time to help with the cause.

"It gives me hope that the local community got behind such a worthwhile cause and I feel the concert broke down some of the stigma surrounding mental health issues."
