A POP-UP shop scheme launched in Caldicot last year has "surpassed expectations" according to the community group that organised it.

'Caldicot Goes Pop!', which started in August, saw previously empty units in the town centre used as temporary trading spaces for local businesses.

Traders could use the unit on a short-term lease for up to two weeks to test the viability of their stock in the area.

The scheme, created by community interest group Caldicot Town Team, was created in a bid to increase footfall in the town centre after figures showed a steady decline over recent years.

It was supported by both Caldicot Town Council and Monmouthshire County Council, with the latter providing funds of up to £4,446 to enable its smooth running.

Since the Free Press covered its launch as part of the 'Your High Street, Use it or lose it' campaign, the unit achieved an occupancy rate of 90 per cent within the first four months.

In total, the Town Team rented out the premises for the equivalent of 35 full weeks.

Businesses that used the unit include AMG Digital Print Solutions, Newport's City Treasures, Watershed Vintage and The White Bakery.

According to Aaron Reeks, one of the group's volunteer directors, two traders are interested in setting up in the town centre permanently and are in active discussion with landlords.

"Caldicot Town Team are really pleased to see that the Caldicot Goes Pop! project has been a great success," said Mr Reeks.

"With a 90 percent occupancy rate and income generated of £1,300 in the first 4 months the project has surpassed initial exceptions.

"The equivalent of 33 days have been donated to charitable groups free of charge. Currently the project is on hold, due to lack of premises."

He added: "All bar one unit in the town centre is currently under offer, meaning Caldicot Town Team are looking for new premises to continue the project."
