THE daughter of Sandie Bowen, who was murdered 20 years ago, has said suspected human remains at Wentwood Reservoir could be her mother.

Gwent Police confirmed on Wednesday, February 1 that specialist teams were investigating reports about suspected human remains found in Wentwood Reservoir.

Anita Giles, who is Sandie Bowen’s daughter, told the Argus that “it could be” her mum.

She said: “I don’t know much but all I know is what police told me when they called. They told me that it could be my mum but we don’t know at this point.”

Sandie Bowen, 53, went missing from her home in Llandogo, Monmouthshire, in August 1997, on the day her husband, Michael Bowen, discovered she was having an affair. It was also found out that he was having an affair at the time.

Bowen told police he had last seen his wife at Newport railway station, having dropped her off for her to catch a train to visit her daughter.

Mrs Bowen never arrived at Folkestone to see her daughter.

Bowen denied any involvement in her disappearance, but Mrs Bowen’s blood and false teeth were discovered at the couple’s house.

Bowen was later charged and convicted of murder in June 1998 despite the body not being found.

In 2002 he admitted responsibility for her death, telling police that the pair had gone to his fishing boat where during a fight he hit her and she fell overboard.

But Bowen has continually refused to reveal the whereabouts of Miss Giles’ mother’s body.

He was freed on February 2, 2015, and Miss Giles was told of his release by her victim support officer afterwards.

Miss Giles told the Argus in 2015 that she didn’t think it was right that Bowen had been released while she was still unaware of what actually happened to her mother.

She said: “I knew that it (Bowen’s release) was going to happen one day, but I assumed he still had another two years to serve.

“There is no closure for me. I’ve never had that, and never had an explanation as to why he did it.”

She added: “I still have to live with everything unresolved, but now he has got a life of liberty, even at his age, and he will have all the support on the outside.

“I just want to know what happened to my mum and where her body is, and it is not right that he should be out. In my mind he has served nowhere near long enough.”
