A PRIMARY school in Chepstow is flying high after its recent ‘green’ rating in the Welsh Government’s National Categorisation of schools.

The Dell Primary School rose from ‘yellow’ to ‘green’ in the latest school bandings, and head teacher Steve King said it was down to team work and leadership.

Mr King said: “Leadership means every member of our fantastic team is responsible for a part of what we do and they all excel in their leadership areas. A head teacher can’t do it on their own and when responsibility and trust is shared between leaders, amazing things can happen.”

The primary school, which has 420 pupils aged from four to 11, was awarded the NACE Challenge Award for excellence in provision for more able pupils and also has a partnership agreement with Tianyi Jinxia Primary School in Xiangtan, China, which was signed in 2015.

The Dell has also worked in partnership with Yankho Elementary School in Lilongwe, Malawi and each year raises funds to pay the fees of two girls at the school. This spring the school will embark on the ambitious ‘YES 1 Million’ project where pupils, led by the school council hope to raise one million Kwacha for the school.

The school also has a parents and teachers association which has held fundraising events and applied for grants to help the school.

Mr King praised the PTA for its help in the school achieving their ‘green’ rating.

“One of the great strengths of the school and an aspect that is going from strength to strength is the support of the PTA,” he said.

“As well as fundraising as termly events, the team have been innovative in applying for grants from various external bodies which have resulted in improvements to outdoor play equipment and provision.”
