UPDATE 9.45pm

The bridge has now reopened to all traffic.

UPDATE: 10.39am

STORM Doris has caused travel disruption to motorists across Gwent after the M48 Severn Bridge was closed to motorists for several hours.

At just before 6am on Thursday morning, the Severn Bridges PLC confirmed that the first bridge was closed to all traffic due to high winds.

A little over four hours later, at around 10.15am, the bridge was partially re-opened, with only high-sided and large vehicles unable to cross the Severn on the M48.

The westbound carriageway is open to traffic, with traffic officers from Highways England traffic officers filtering all high-sided vehicles towards a diversion over the M4 Severn Crossing.

The bridge was closed to eastbound traffic overnight and the filtering is expected to be in place until later this afternoon and while the bridge is open, Highways England will continue to monitor wind speeds closely.

Motorists planning to travel today are encouraged to plan their journey in advance and check the latest weather and traffic conditions along the route.

Drivers should be aware of sudden gusts of wind, and give high-sided vehicles, caravans, motorbikes and bicycles plenty of space.

Recent figures have revealed that travelling too fast for the current conditions was identified as a factor in one in nine road deaths in Great Britain last year, with drivers failing to alter how they drive in response to changing conditions on the road.

The M4 Second Severn Crossing has remained unaffected by Storm Doris, which has seen a yellow weather warning of wind enforced by the Met Office across Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.

UPDATE: 10.27am

THE M48 Severn Bridge is now closed only to high-sided vehicles.

UPDATE: 9.03am

The M48 Severn Bridge remains closed to all traffic due to high winds. A diversion is in place using the M4 Second Severn Crossing.

As a result, there is queuing traffic on the exit slip road onto the M4 in both directions at junction 23A Magor Services.

This is the result of traffic from Chepstow being forced to down around and the volume of traffic is caused the eastbound side to become heavy with traffic as it must give way to the roundabout above the M4.

UPDATE: 6.46am

THE bridge is cliosed by junction two - the A466 link road to Chepstow - and junction one for Aust.

A diversion is in place across the M4 Second Severn Crossing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE M48 Severn Bridge is closed in both directions due to high winds.

The bridge, which links Monmouthshire to Gloucestershire, was closed at just before 6am this morning.

However, the M4 Second Severn Crossing remains open to all traffic, with all lanes currently open.
