MAJOR overnight road closures that could last up to a year are being proposed along the M4 between Monmouthshire and Newport.

A public notice issued yesterday by the Welsh Government outlines plans to stop vehicles from using the routes while works are completed on or near the slip roads between Junction 23a (Magor) and Junction 28 (Tredegar Park).

Areas that will also be closed for works include the entire lengths of the Junction 24 (Coldra), Junction 25 (Caerleon), Junction 25a (Usk Bridge) and Junction 26 (Malpas) slip roads.

All vehicles will be prohibited from using the routes between 8pm and 6am from Tuesday, April 4 for a maximum period of 12 months.

Notices of the closures will be displayed approximately one week before the work is set to begin.

The notice also states that the slip road closures will not conflict with each other.

Each of the slip roads will have their own alternative routes for both eastbound and westbound traffic.

Roads that are expected to be used as alternative routes, subject to the order’s approval, include the M48 to Newhouse Interchange, the B4596/A4042, A4042 to Grove Park Roundabout and the A4051 to Woodlands Roundabout.

The diversionary routes for vehicles wishing the leave the M4 in either direction at Junctions 24, 26, 27 and 28 will be to remain on the motorway, continue until to the next available junction, exit and return on the opposite carriageway to leave at the desired location.

For eastbound traffic looking to join the M4 at the affected junctions, commuters will be able to join the westbound carriageway of the M4, continue to the next available junction, exit and return eastbound.

The same applies for westbound vehicles.
